The Jade Hall Peony
Hsu Hsi
Southern T'ang Kingdom,
Five Dynasties Period
(A.D. 907-959)
Hanging scroll. ink and
colors on silk.
Width 38.3cm
The Five Dynasties
artists Hsu Hsi and Huang
Ch'uan were both renowned
as flower and bird painters,
with Huang Ch'uan's style
being considered more
sumptuous, and Hsu Hsi's
more natural. In this
painting, however, Hsu Hsi
shows himself no less a
master of the sumptuous
style.
